Yellow Aquarium Water Driftwood

Certain kinds of wood especially driftwood and bogwood can lead to water discoloration.

Yellow aquarium water diminishes the overall aesthetic appeal of the aquarium. All you need to do is submerge your aquarium driftwood in a container of water and leave it in there for 1 to 2 weeks. If you have this wood in your aquarium and the water is clear not cloudy and the color ranges from light yellow to tea. 1 cause of yellow aquarium water is tannins.

The main reasons why an aquarium s water turns yellow includes an overabundance of organic compounds decaying live plants untreated driftwood leaching tannins diatom algae or the need for carbon in your aquarium filter. Sometimes it can even be harmful to the health of the fish or your aquarium plants. Ideally boiling the driftwood before hand as much as possible will release most of the tannins. Tannins are present in driftwood and over time they will leach into the aquarium water staining it yellow to brown.

I ordered some mopani online for my tank and boiled the heck out of it for hours before i put it in my tank and it still tinted the water. These natural astringents will leach into your water if you use driftwood especially african driftwood or african root. I have some nice pieces of driftwood that came with my 2nd hand tank but the person that owned the tank before me had nasty yellow brown water in it and i know this was from the driftwood he had kind of neglected the tank so i m not sure if the lack of water changes was the reason for this. Driftwood is making water yellow ish i recently added malaysian driftwood after soaking it multiple times for days at a time in hot water.

Tannins lower the ph of the water and soften it. Keep an eye on the water and once it becomes darkened by the tannins empty it out and replace it with fresh. It s been a couple weeks and i do weekly water changes but it eventually turns yellow again. Keep doing this until the water stops becoming significantly darkened by the tannins.

With that being said the water will still change a bit but like rsps said frequent water changes will do the trick. It makes it hard for you to look at the fish and care for it.
