Water Heater T P Discharge Line

I would like to install a drain pan under the water heater.

I did a little research and quickly discovered that this issue needs much more discussion than is. Temperature pressure relief valve discharge tubes drain lines their piping. Water heaters should have a temperature and pressure relief valve for safety purposes. Building codes require temperature pressure relief tpr valves with discharge pipes on all new water heater installations.

I want to cut my relief discharge line and install a tee in order to connect my drain pan s line and allow both to exit using the existing pipe. If there is no discharge line connected to the t p valve and it opens up those near the water heater may suffer 1st 2nd or 3rd degree burns. This relieves the high water pressure and prevents the water heater from rupturing or exploding. The temperature pressure relief valve or tpr valve on any heated appliance that contains water such as a heating boiler hot water tank water heater water cylinder must have a drain line or discharge tube properly installed routed and made of proper materials.

Scalding water and steam escape the tank through the valve and tube to relieve the pressure. The tpr valve will activate if either water temperature measured in degrees fahrenheit or pressure measured in pounds per square inch psi exceed safe levels. 8 termination of the tpr drain pipe cannot be more than 6 inches or less than two pipe diameters above the floor ground or waster receptor flood rim level. Ultimately should the water heater t p discharge pipe be run to the exterior of the crawl space.

Place a bucket below the discharge tube. The watts 210 shuts off the gas it the temperture is in excessive. Water heater manufacturers recommend regular checking of the t p valve. Currently i only have a t p relief discharge line that runs down to just above the pedestal and out through the exterior wall.

The purpose of this drain line is to discharge potentially hot scalding water to a safe location so that a bystander is not scalded. Make sure that the discharge tube is firmly attached. A few installers have raised a question about the discharge pipe for the water heater temperature and pressure t p relief valve. When the water heater is in a basement or below grade it may not be possible to arrange for a gravity drain of the tprv.

A trapped tpr dischage pipe is a common defect when a replacement water heater s tpr valve is lower than the original one and the installer connects to the exisitng discharge piping at the wall. If the pressure in the tank exceeds 150 psi or the temperature exceeds 210 degrees fahrenheit the tpr valve opens to release the pressure. A watts 210 valve can be installed. Wear closed toe shoes to avoid scalding.

When the temperature gets too high the valve opens up and water runs out through it.
